V-Bank Filter Box

Product Overview

Despite "box" in its name, the V-Bank Filter Box is a single V-bank HEPA filter: several mini-pleat packs arranged in a V shape inside one frame, not a housing. In the same 610×610×290 size at 2000 CFM (56.6 CMM), the V-bank has an initial pressure drop of about 249 Pa, about 25% lower than the roughly 333 Pa of a high-capacity aluminum-separator filter. Efficiency 97% / 99.97% / 99.99% (@0.3 μm); galvanized steel or ABS plastic frame.

Detailed Description

The V-Bank Filter Box has "box" in its name, but it is not a housing. It is a single V-bank HEPA filter: several thin mini-pleat packs set at an angle in a V shape and mounted together in one frame, replaced as one filter. Because the packs are angled, the same opening holds more media than a flat panel would, so it handles high airflow at a low pressure drop. It is installed in an air handling unit (AHU) or filter housing as the final high-efficiency stage. Versions are named by the number of Vs: 2V, 3V, 4V, 5V, 6V and 8V — the number of V shapes in the frame. More Vs means more media. Efficiencies are 97%, 99.97% and 99.99% (@0.3 μm). HEPA usually means 99.97% or higher at 0.3 μm (the definition in the US Department of Energy standard DOE-STD-3020), so the 97% grade is not strictly HEPA and is used where requirements are lower.

How much lower is the pressure drop than an aluminum-separator HEPA?

In the same 610×610×290 frame at the same 2000 CFM (56.6 CMM), the V-bank's initial pressure drop is about 25% lower. The chart shows two filters from the same quotation: the 6V at about 249 Pa and the high-capacity aluminum-separator filter at about 333 Pa.

Both are rated at 2000 CFM (56.6 CMM); pressure drops were 25.4 and 34 mmH₂O, converted to Pa. See the table in the text for other versions.

The pressure drops were originally given in mmH₂O: 25.4 mmH₂O ≈ 249 Pa and 34 mmH₂O ≈ 333 Pa. A lower pressure drop means less resistance for the fan to overcome.

Airflow and pressure drop by number of Vs

At the 610×610 size, most versions are rated at 56.6 CMM (2000 CFM), which works out to a face velocity of about 2.5 m/s at the opening — much higher than the 0.45 m/s typical of a flat mini-pleat HEPA. Because the packs are angled, though, the air actually passing through the media moves much more slowly. Half sizes such as 289×595 and 305×610 handle roughly half the airflow. The table lists actual values from our model ratings and quotations:

The values come from different quotations and model ratings, with media and pack counts that are not identical, so use them for the general range; to compare two versions, use the same quotation. Values originally in mmH₂O have been converted to Pa (30 mmH₂O ≈ 294 Pa). For sizes and V counts not listed, airflow and pressure drop are provided per selection.

Frames and gaskets

- Frame: galvanized steel, galvanized steel with single header (a flange around one side of the frame), or ABS plastic - Gasket: outlet face, back of the header, or double gasket (gaskets on both faces, for bag-in/bag-out BIBO housings) - Efficiency: 97%, 99.97% and 99.99% (@0.3 μm) - Sizes: full sizes such as 610×610, 592×592 and 607×607, and half sizes such as 289×595 and 305×610; common depths are 290/292 mm

Where it is used

- The final HEPA stage of an air handling unit (AHU), where high airflow is needed with a low pressure drop - The high-efficiency stage of bag-in/bag-out (BIBO) filter housings (double-gasket version) - When replacing, please provide: number of Vs, frame size and depth, efficiency, frame material and which face the gasket is on — ideally with a photo of the old filter
Is the "V-Bank Filter Box" a whole box? Do I need to buy a housing as well?

It is not a box. It is a V-bank HEPA filter replaced as one piece: several mini-pleat packs arranged in a V inside a frame, which fits straight into the existing filter frame of an air handling unit or filter housing. "Box" is simply the name it has long been sold under. If you need a housing to hold filters, see the bag-in/bag-out filter housing or the ceiling HEPA box.

How do I choose between 2V, 4V, 5V, 6V and 8V?

The V count is the number of V shapes in the frame; more Vs means more media, and usually a lower pressure drop at the same airflow. For example, at the same rated 56.6 CMM, the 4V is about 300 Pa and the 6V is 230 Pa. Some customers have told us outright that they do not use 2V or 4V because they clog easily; versions we have supplied include the 5V 610×610×290 (99.99%) and the 3V 305×610×292. Start from the airflow, then check the pressure drop your air handling unit can accept.

How much air can one filter handle? Is it enough for my 52 CMM system?

Most 610×610 V-bank filters are rated at 56.6 CMM (2000 CFM), a face velocity of about 2.5 m/s at the opening. 52 CMM is within that rating, and below the rated airflow the pressure drop is also lower than the stated value. Note, however, that the 99.99% 5V 610×610×290 is rated at about 48 CMM (1700 CFM); 52 CMM exceeds that, so choose a version rated at 56.6 CMM or more. Half sizes such as 289×595 handle about half the airflow.

What is different about a V-bank HEPA for a bag-in/bag-out (BIBO) housing?

The filter itself is the same V-bank design; the difference is the gasket. A BIBO housing needs a double gasket (gaskets on both faces), whereas a normal air handling unit only needs an outlet-face or header-back gasket. The size must match the filter slot in the housing, so please give the old filter's frame size, depth, number of Vs and efficiency.

Do you have plastic (ABS) frames? Can you make aluminum or stainless steel frames?

Yes — there are three frames: galvanized steel, galvanized steel with single header, and ABS plastic. When replacing, ordering the same frame material and header direction as the old filter is the safest choice; a single-header flange must line up with the mounting frame. Our current models come only in these three frames; if you need aluminum or stainless steel, please say so in your inquiry and we will confirm separately.
