Antimicrobial Air Filter (Silver-Copper Ion / Herbal / HEPA Composite)

Product Overview

An antimicrobial air filter is an air filter whose media has been given an antimicrobial treatment — silver or copper ions built into the fibers, an antimicrobial agent coated on the surface, or a plant (herbal) extract — so that bacteria caught by the filter do not easily multiply on it. We have made pre-filters (galvanized frame, 24×24×1 in), 85% bag filters, herbal pleated filters, and HEPA composite filters in aluminum or paper frames (for example 475×205×95 mm with about 88 pleats). Antimicrobial treatment is not the same as filtration efficiency: how many particles are caught still depends on the media grade.

Detailed Description

An antimicrobial air filter is an air filter whose media has been given an antimicrobial treatment. There are three common approaches: fibers that contain antimicrobial ions such as silver or copper, an antimicrobial agent coated on the surface of the media, or media impregnated with a plant (herbal) extract. The aim is to keep the bacteria the filter catches from easily multiplying on the media. One thing to be clear about first: antimicrobial treatment and filtration efficiency are two different things. How many particles a filter catches still depends on the media grade. The antimicrobial filters we have made range from pre-filters, 85% bag filters and herbal pleated filters to HEPA composite filters, so start by deciding what filtration grade you need.

What are the three antimicrobial treatments?

The difference between them is where the antimicrobial ingredient sits: mixed into the fiber, coated on the fiber surface, or a plant extract attached to the media. Whichever is used, the job is the same — keeping caught bacteria from easily multiplying on the media — while the filtration grade is still set by the media itself.

Schematic, not to scale. Antimicrobial effect per the manufacturer's test report; particle capture depends on the media grade.

- Antimicrobial ions in the fiber: ions such as silver or copper are mixed in when the fiber is made, so they are distributed inside it - Surface coating: after the media is made, an antimicrobial agent is coated on the fiber surface - Plant (herbal) extract: a plant extract is impregnated into or coated onto the media Formulations and methods vary by manufacturer; the antimicrobial effect and how long it lasts are provided per the original manufacturer's test reports and data.

Antimicrobial does not mean filtration efficiency

Antimicrobial treatment deals with what happens after capture: it keeps bacteria stuck on the media from easily growing. How much is captured depends on the media grade — a pre-filter mainly stops larger dust, an 85% bag filter catches finer dust, and HEPA catches the finest. So if a space requires HEPA-grade filtration, choose a HEPA composite antimicrobial filter; an antimicrobial pre-filter or bag filter cannot replace HEPA.

Antimicrobial rate and service life

The antimicrobial rate and service life are provided per the original manufacturer's data, and we do not quote antimicrobial percentages on this page: results of antimicrobial tests vary with the test method and the bacterial strain, so a single number is easy to misread. If you need it, mention it when you request a quote and we will provide the original manufacturer's test report. Replace an antimicrobial filter on the same basis as any other filter — by how far its pressure drop has risen and by the conditions it works in.
Can an antimicrobial filter replace a HEPA filter?

No. Antimicrobial treatment keeps caught bacteria from easily multiplying on the media; how many particles are captured still depends on the media grade, so an antimicrobial pre-filter or 85% bag filter still filters at pre-filter or bag-filter level. If you need HEPA grade, choose a HEPA composite antimicrobial filter — we have made 475×205×95 and 275×586×95 mm versions in aluminum or paper frames with about 88 pleats.

Is the antimicrobial agent inside the fiber or sprayed on the surface? Will it wear off?

It depends on the method: in the in-fiber type, ions such as silver or copper are mixed in when the fiber is made; in the surface-coated type, an antimicrobial agent is coated on the fiber surface after the media is made; in the herbal type, a plant extract is impregnated into or coated onto the media. Formulations differ by manufacturer, and how long the effect lasts is per the original manufacturer's data; if you want to compare, tell us your operating conditions and we will include that product's manufacturer data.

What frames and efficiencies are available for antimicrobial filters?

We have made four kinds: pre-filters (silver-copper-titanium treated, galvanized frame, 24×24×1 and 12×24×1 in), bag filters (85% efficiency, 24×24×12 and 12×24×12 in), herbal pleated filters (595×595×50 and 245×400×8 mm), and HEPA composite filters (aluminum or paper frame). Sizes can be made to fit your equipment; for a replacement, matching the old filter's size and grade is safest.

Can you provide an antimicrobial test report?

Yes. The antimicrobial rate and test method are provided per the original manufacturer's test report; please say which product you need it for when you request a quote. Note that an antimicrobial report shows how well bacterial growth on the media is suppressed — a separate document from the filter's filtration efficiency. How many particles a HEPA composite filter captures depends on its media grade.
