흄후드의 핵심 기능은 배기입니다. 실험 조작에서는 유해 가스, 악취, 습기와 함께 인화성·폭발성 물질과 부식성 물질이 나오는데, 흄후드는 이것들을 오염원 가까이에서 바로 빨아들여 실험실의 다른 구역으로 퍼지지 않게 합니다. 클린벤치와는 방향이 완전히 반대라는 점에 유의해야 합니다. 클린벤치는 깨끗한 공기를 내보내 시료를 보호하고, 흄후드는 오염된 공기를 빨아들여 사람을 보호합니다. 유해 물질을 다룰 때는 반드시 흄후드를 써야 하며 클린벤치를 써서는 안 됩니다.

Face velocity is the safety metric, not extract volume

Many buyers look only at extract volume, but what actually determines safety is the **face velocity** at the sash opening — the speed at which air draws contaminants inward. Two hoods with identical extract volume will have completely different face velocities if their sash openings differ. The larger the opening, the lower the face velocity, and the more easily contaminants escape. That is why sash opening height matters on the specification sheet: keeping the sash at or below the recommended height is what puts face velocity at its design value. Working with the sash fully open removes the safety margin.

Material follows the chemistry

**All stainless steel** resists heat and mechanical damage and cleans well, which suits general chemical and biological work — but it does not tolerate strong acids or chloride-rich environments. **PP engineering plastic** resists strong acids and alkalis and is the only sensible choice around hydrofluoric, hydrochloric or nitric acid, where stainless steel corrodes through quickly. **Steel-wood and all-steel** cost less and suit teaching laboratories and general analytical rooms where reagents are not strongly corrosive. Choosing the wrong material does not merely shorten service life — the structure of the hood is weakened by corrosion while in use, which is considerably more dangerous than visible rust.
