Nylon Mesh Filter

Product Overview

A nylon air filter is a pre-filter made of nylon mesh, commonly fitted in air conditioners, air handling units, fans and return grilles to stop larger dust and lint. Single or double layer; the edges can be a wire frame (with divisions and optional tabs), ultrasonic sealing, a galvanized or aluminum frame, or nylon mesh sandwiched between stainless steel mesh; white or black. Sizes we have made range from about 100×100 to 1050×1800 mm, and the mesh can also be bought by the roll (1.2 m wide).

Detailed Description

A nylon air filter is a pre-filter made of nylon mesh. It is commonly fitted in air conditioners, air handling units, fans and return grilles to stop larger dust, lint and hair first. The mesh is thin with little resistance to airflow and can be made in all sorts of sizes to fit the opening. The first thing we ask when making one to order: single-layer or double-layer mesh?

Single or double layer?

Single layer is one sheet of nylon mesh; double layer is two sheets stacked together. Double layer catches more, but air passes through less easily. When replacing, ordering the same number of layers as the old filter is safest.

How are the edges finished? Four constructions

Schematic, not to scale. Mesh count and layers are provided per selection.

- Wire frame: the edges are held by steel wire (2.8, 3 or 4 mm, galvanized or stainless), with the mesh edges bound in fabric. Large pieces are divided by wire into three, six or nine sections, and small tabs can be added for pulling the filter out - Ultrasonic sealing: the edges are fused by ultrasonic welding, with no frame — light and thin - Galvanized or aluminum frame: fitted in a metal frame 7–45 mm deep - Nylon mesh sandwiched in stainless mesh: double-layer nylon mesh held between stainless steel mesh on both faces, for a stiffer filter Where several filters sit side by side in one opening, "joining edges" can be made so neighboring filters lock together with no gaps.

Sizes and colors

The nylon filters we have made range from small pieces of about 100×100 mm for equipment to large 1050×1800 mm panels — for example 800×225, 1040×235 and 958×786 mm. Very large single pieces are hard to ship: one customer wanted a 4000×2200 mm hanging screen, which we could not make because freight carriers would not accept it, so we recommend splitting such sizes. Colors are white and black. If you prefer to cut it yourself, the mesh is sold on its own: black nylon mesh 1.2 m wide in 10 m rolls, and 1.2 m wide cut lengths.

Industry typical values (from public data)

We do not have a specification sheet for the mesh itself, so the table below summarizes what public catalogs typically state; the shipping specification governs.
ItemTypical value
MaterialNylon (polyamide) monofilament mesh
ClassLow-efficiency pre-filter, roughly EN 779 G1–G2
WashableYes; public sources generally describe it as reusable after washing
Service temperatureAmbient air conditioning, about 60°C or below (limited by the frame and stitching)
How do I choose between single and double layer?

Single layer is one sheet of nylon mesh with low resistance; double layer is two sheets stacked, catching more but letting air through less easily. When replacing, order the same number of layers as the old filter; for new equipment, tell us where it goes and what it needs to stop, and we will advise. Efficiency and pressure drop for both are provided per selection.

What edge constructions are there, and how do they differ?

There are four: wire frame (2.8, 3 or 4 mm wire; large pieces can be divided into three, six or nine sections), ultrasonic sealing (no frame, light and thin), galvanized or aluminum frame (7–45 mm deep), and double-layer nylon mesh sandwiched in stainless steel mesh. Matching the original construction makes the filter easiest to refit; if unsure, send us photos of the front and the edge.

Several filters sit side by side in one opening. Can they be joined?

Yes. Neighboring filters can be made with "joining edges" that lock together so there are no gaps between pieces — a healthcare facility's air handling units, for example, used single-layer galvanized filters joined on two edges. Please tell us the size of each piece, which edges need joining, and the total number of pieces.

Can I buy just the mesh and cut it myself?

Yes. Black nylon mesh comes in 1.2 m wide, 10 m rolls, and in 1.2 m wide cut lengths. Self-cut edges tend to fray; if needed, we can also cut to size and finish the edges with ultrasonic sealing or a frame.
