Primary Metal Filter (Removable / Inner-Clamp Type)

Product Overview

A primary metal filter is a pre-filter made of a galvanized, aluminum or stainless steel frame holding non-woven or similar media — only the frame is metal; it is not an all-metal mesh and cannot be washed as a whole. It comes in two types: removable (take off the cross bar on one face and replace just the media) and clip-in, also called inner-clamp (the media is held between diamond mesh on both faces, and the whole unit is replaced). About 74% of our roughly 133 models are custom sizes for specific equipment, 6–50 mm thick.

Detailed Description

The "metal" in a primary metal filter refers to the frame: a galvanized, aluminum or stainless steel frame with non-woven or similar media inside. It is not an all-metal mesh, so it cannot be washed as a whole — the inside is non-woven media, and when it gets dirty you replace the media or the whole unit rather than wash and reuse it. If you need an all-metal mesh filter that is taken out, washed and reused, see "All-Aluminum Air Filter / All-Stainless-Steel Air Filter". This filter is used as a pre-filter in air conditioning and ventilation equipment and comes in two types. With the removable type, you take off the cross bar on one face and replace just the media inside, keeping the frame. With the clip-in (inner-clamp) type, the media is held between diamond mesh on both faces, and the whole unit, frame included, is replaced when dirty.

Three different things are all called "metal filters"

When customers say "metal filter", they may mean three different things: an all-metal mesh filter, a metal-frame removable filter, or a metal-frame clip-in filter. Only the first is metal throughout and washable; the other two are the products on this page, with non-woven or similar media inside — replace them, do not wash them.

Schematic, not to scale. For all-metal mesh, see "All-Aluminum Air Filter / All-Stainless-Steel Air Filter".

Many customers are not sure which kind they have. One customer assumed a "metal filter" could be washed as a whole; once we understood the application, what we actually recommended was an all-stainless-steel mesh filter. So before ordering, please check whether the inside is metal mesh or non-woven media.

How do the removable and clip-in types differ?

The difference is whether the media can be taken out and replaced on its own. On the removable type, taking off the cross bar on one face lets you remove the media, and frame and media can be bought separately; on the clip-in type, the media is held between diamond mesh on both faces, so the whole unit is replaced, frame included.

If a removable filter has a divided frame (an extra stiffener across the middle making two openings), each frame takes two media pads.

What media can go inside?

Mostly non-woven. Among our roughly 133 models, there are also: - Black foam: 16 models, all clip-in - Activated-carbon non-woven: 9 models - Green-and-white glass fiber: 7 models - Heat-resistant fiber media: 1 model Another 8 models are empty frames only, for media you supply yourself. Efficiency and pressure drop for each medium are provided per selection.

Sizes and thickness

Most are custom sizes for specific equipment. Of the 127 models whose dimensions we can read, only 33 are standard sizes such as 595×595 and 610×610; about 74% are made to fit particular equipment. Thickness ranges from 6 to 50 mm. The most common is 10 mm (21 models), followed by 20 mm and 22 mm (17 models each) and 15 mm (12 models). When replacing, measure the length, width and thickness of the old filter, or send us photos of the face and the edge.

Specifications

- Type: removable (cross bar on one face comes off) / clip-in (diamond mesh on both faces) - Frame: galvanized, aluminum or stainless steel - Media: mostly non-woven; also black foam, activated-carbon non-woven, green-and-white glass fiber and heat-resistant fiber media; empty frames available - Thickness: 6–50 mm - Efficiency and pressure drop: provided per selection
What is the difference between the removable and clip-in types, and how can I tell which one I have?

Look at the face. If one face has an X-shaped cross bar that comes off so the media can be lifted out in one piece, it is the removable type, and from then on you only replace the media. If both faces are diamond mesh, the media is held in and cannot be taken out, and there is usually no cross bar, it is the clip-in type, replaced as a whole unit with the frame. Among our models, about 83 are removable and about 49 are clip-in. If unsure, send us photos of the front, back and edge.

Aren't metal filters supposed to be washable as a whole?

Not this one. Only its frame is metal; the inside is non-woven or similar media, so when it is dirty you replace the media (removable type) or the whole unit with its frame (clip-in type) instead of washing and reusing it. One customer also assumed a "metal filter" could be washed as a whole; once we understood the application, we recommended an all-stainless-steel mesh filter. For a filter that is washed and reused as a whole, see "All-Aluminum Air Filter / All-Stainless-Steel Air Filter".

To replace the media in a removable filter, what do I order? How many pads does a divided frame take?

Order only the media pads and keep the frame. Tell us the media type (for example non-woven), the pad length × width, thickness and quantity; if you are unsure of the pad size, give us the frame's outside dimensions and thickness. A divided frame has a stiffener across the middle making two openings, so each frame takes two pads.

What media can a clip-in filter hold?

Mostly non-woven. All 16 of our black-foam models are clip-in, and green-and-white glass fiber is also made in clip-in models. For activated-carbon non-woven or heat-resistant fiber media in a clip-in build, tell us the application when you inquire and we will confirm how it can be made. Efficiency and pressure drop are provided per selection.

Can I buy just the empty frame and fit my own media?

Yes — 8 of our models are empty frames only. Please give us the outside dimensions, thickness, frame material (galvanized, aluminum or stainless steel) and whether you need a divided frame; you can then buy the media pads from us or source your own.
