Product Overview

The air shower with high-speed PVC roll-up doors replaces rigid door leaves with a flexible curtain that rolls up vertically. Because the curtain rolls upward, the door needs no swing radius, so the unit fits even where corridors are narrow and there is not enough space in front of the door, and the door opening is also easier to make wider so that trolleys and people can share it. The curtain opens and closes quickly and can be upgraded to fully automatic infrared sensing, so personnel do not have to touch any door handle. The shower section is the same as a standard air shower: nozzle air velocity 20–25 m/s, shower time adjustable from 0–99 s, and the two roll-up doors electronically interlocked so they are never open at the same time. The trade-off is that a flexible curtain does not seal as tightly as a rigid door leaf with a gasket, making it suitable for entrances of moderate cleanliness class.

No swing radius

Whether single or double, rigid door leaves need a fan-shaped clear area in front of or behind the door. When an existing plant is retrofitted, this clear area is often the reason an air shower cannot be fitted: the corridor is already narrow, and once the swing radius of the door is subtracted, no passage width is left. The curtain rolls up vertically and occupies only the space for the roller above the door head; no clear floor area is needed at all. When surveying the site, the focus therefore shifts from "how deep a clearance is needed in front of the door" to "is there enough height above the door opening for the roller", and the positions of the ceiling, beams and pipework must be checked as well. The size of the roller box varies with the door opening width and the curtain material; when requesting a quote, please provide the width and height of the door opening and the clearance above it.

The door opening can be made wider

The wider a swing door leaf, the larger its swing radius and the heavier it becomes; a roll-up curtain has no such limit, and widening the door opening only requires a longer roller. This makes the roll-up door air shower suitable for entrances where personnel occasionally push a small trolley or tote boxes through with them. But the line must be drawn clearly: occasional trolleys passing through can be handled by a roll-up door air shower; regular pallets, forklifts or large volumes of material call for a separate cargo air shower tunnel, so that people and materials each have their own route, instead of waiting for each other and contaminating each other in the same space.

Airtightness is the price paid

When a rigid door leaf closes, it presses against the door frame through a gasket; a flexible curtain relies on the guide rails on both sides and the bottom edge to fit snugly, and gap control is not as good as with a rigid door. The clean area is usually kept at positive pressure relative to the outside, and EU GMP Annex 1 (2022) §4.14 requires at least 10 Pa between adjacent rooms of different grades; the larger the pressure difference, the more the curtain is pushed to one side and the more noticeable leakage at the edges becomes. For this reason, roll-up door air showers are suited to entrances of moderate cleanliness class, mainly for electronics assembly or general manufacturing; for high-grade areas, or where the pressure difference across the entrance is large, a rigid door with a gasket is still recommended. To decide, look at what lies on each side of the roll-up door: if one side is an ordinary corridor and the other is a changing or buffer area, the seal of a roll-up door is usually sufficient; if the other side opens directly onto a production area cleaner than ISO 7 (ISO 5, ISO 6), the pressure difference and the door type should be reconsidered.

Fast opening and touch-free operation

The curtain opens and closes quickly, so the door stays open only briefly and less outside air is carried in with each passage. Once upgraded to fully automatic infrared sensing, the door opens as a person approaches and closes automatically after they pass through, so hands never need to touch a door handle, which makes a real difference for personnel already wearing gloves. After automation, confirm two things: first, the interlock sequence of the two roll-up doors (the exit opens only after the entrance has closed and the shower has finished); second, how the curtain detects people or trolleys while it is coming down. Both should be written into the requirements when requesting a quote.

The curtain is also a surface to be wiped

The curtain is the part most often touched by people and trolleys, and its surface picks up dirt from gloves and trolley wheels; routine cleaning should include wiping both sides of the curtain. PVC is fine with most cleaning agents and alcohol; if other disinfectants are planned, please mention them when requesting a quote so that the suitability of the curtain material can be confirmed. The key points for daily inspection are the guide rails and the bottom edge: dust accumulating in the rails and wear or deformation of the bottom seal both widen the gap when the curtain is closed. When deep scratches or holes appear on the curtain surface, they affect more than appearance: scratches are also hiding places for dirt that wiping cannot reach, and replacement should be arranged.
